SPDR (“Spider”, from Standard & Poor’s Depositary Receipts) is the ETF brand of State Street Global Advisors, part of State Street, the Boston bank founded in 1792. In January 1993 it launched SPY, the first US-listed ETF: the entire ETF industry starts here.
What sets it apart. The historic primacy is also operational: the parent is one of the world’s largest securities custodians, a vertical integration few can match. It is the home of sector ETFs (slicing the S&P 500 into sectors was its invention) and of core ETFs among the cheapest in our census.
